General description

Armodafinil is a prescription medication used to promote wakefulness [1]. It is usually prescribed to people who experience excessive sleepiness as a result of sleep disorders. While Armodafinil does not help treat the disorders, it does help its users stay awake and functional during the day.

Doctors prescribe armodafinil for both labeled and off-label uses. Uses on the label include [2]:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Shift work disorder

Doctors may also prescribe it for various off-label uses, such as:

  • ADHD
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Major depressive disorder

Research has consistently shown that it is effective for its intended use: keeping people awake and giving energy [3, 4, 5].

Benefits

We know that Modafinil has many incredible cognitive effects because there has been a lot of research done on it. Unfortunately, we don't have the same type of research on the cognitive effects of Armodafinil versus modafinil.

Part of the reason is that armodafinil is about 20 years newer; There hasn't been as much time to do so much high-quality research on it.

Still, there have been some studies that generally confirm that Armodafinil has similar cognitive benefits to Modafinil. Some of the nootropic effects of armodafinil that have been supported by research include:

  • Memory. Randomized control trials have shown that participants taking armodafinil have significantly better memory quality and speed than those taking a placebo.5, 6].
  • Vigilance and fatigue. Several studies have confirmed that armodafinil improves wakefulness and reduces fatigue, both in healthy individuals and those with various health conditions.5, 6, 7].
  • Alertness and concentration. Several studies have confirmed that Armodafinil creates increased alertness and increased focus of attention [5, 6]. This is where all the claims about insane productivity come from.
  • Cheer up. Research suggests that, like modafinil, armodafinil can significantly improve mood and reduce depressive symptoms [8, 9]. This is partly why it is used as a complementary therapy for patients with depression.

Since not as much research has been done on armodafinil, its full range of effects has not yet been clarified. However, researchers suggest that its effects are probably very similar to those of its cousin, modafinil. The following cognitive benefits of modafinil may also be benefits of armodafinil, although they have not yet been proven in studies on armodafinil:

  • Improving spatial planning [10]
  • Improved visual pattern recognition [10]
  • Faster reaction times [10]
  • Improved strategizing [10]
  • Better planning for the future [11]
  • Improved decision making [11]
  • Improved visual processing [12]
  • Greater motivation for work [13]

Again, research so far has only confirmed those effects of modafinil; They are still testing them on Armodafinil. Still, our own anecdotal experience suggests that Armodafinil has absolutely similar cognitive-enhancing effects as Modafinil.

More generally, researchers suggest that these two medications are similar and work in similar ways.1], so it makes sense to expect that they would also have similar cognitive effects.

Side effects

Like any medication, some users report armodafinil side effects. However, they are usually relatively rare and are not usually serious. The most common side effects of armodafinil, along with their estimated prevalence rates, are [14]:

  • Headaches (17%)
  • Nausea (7%)
  • Dizziness (5%)
  • Insomnia (5%)
  • Anxiety (4%)
  • Diarrhea (4%)
  • Dry mouth (4%)
  • Depression (2%)
  • Fatigue (2%)
  • Palpitations (2%)

In addition to being generally rare and mild in severity, most of these side effects were dose-dependent. That means they were more likely to occur at higher doses.

In our experience, some of these side effects are avoidable. We have found the following to be effective strategies to reduce the likelihood of experiencing armodafinil side effects:

  • Start with a low dose. That way you can see how it affects you. Try 50 mg to start. See our Armodafinil Dosing Guide for more details on how to choose an appropriate dosage.
  • Do not take doses greater than 150 mg. While you can find armodafinil tablets in 200 mg and 250 mg doses, we do not recommend them. Larger doses provide no additional benefit and increase the likelihood of experiencing side effects.
  • Take it early in the morning. Armodafinil can cause insomnia if you are not careful. Avoid this by making sure you take it as soon as you wake up in the morning and at least before 10:00 a.m.
  • Take it with food. In our experience, eating a large meal before taking armodafinil helps reduce nausea or stomach problems. Armodafinil may decrease appetite, so it is important remember eat.
  • Drinking water. Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to avoid dehydration and headaches.

Armodafinil Safety

There are some side effects, but is Armodafinil considered safe?

Yeah. Research consistently shows that armodafinil is well tolerated in almost all people and is considered absolutely safe [8, 9, 15]. But with that being said, here are some considerations to ensure safe use of Armodafinil.

Recommended Armodafinil Dosage

The recommended dose for patients with narcolepsy or sleep apnea is [14]:

  • 150 mg to 250 mg
  • Taken orally as a single dose.
  • In the morning

For those looking for nootropic benefits, we found the best Armodafinil dosage to be:

  • 150mg
  • Taken orally as a single dose.
  • In the morning (before 10:00 a.m.)
  • With or just after a large meal

Overdose

There is little direct research on the overdose potential of armodafinil.Instead, researchers suggest that it has a very similar safety and overdose profile to its cousin Modafinil [16].

The information about Modafinil overdose It's very clear. While overdoses (taking more doses than prescribed) increase the likelihood of experiencing side effects, there are practically no No danger of permanent damage or death.

Case reports indicate that people took up to 8 grams of the product (more than 80 times the recommended dose) and remained in stable condition.

Based on the large amount of research on modafinil overdose and the similarity between armodafinil and modafinil, scientists are fairly confident that armodafinil overdose is not lethal [17].

Armodafinil Interactions and Contraindications

Interactions occur when Armodafinil changes the effectiveness or potency of another medication. To avoid interactions, it is recommended not to use Armodafinil if you are also taking [14]:

  • Steroid contraceptives
  • cyclosporine
  • Midazolam
  • triazolam
  • phenytoin
  • diazepam
  • propranolol
  • omeprazole
  • clomipramine
  • warfarin

Special populations

Armodafinil is new, so it has not yet been tested for safety in all populations. Special precautions should be taken if you belong to any of the following groups:

  • People with severe liver failure: Your doctor should consider reducing the dose of armodafinil [14].
  • Geriatric populations: Because older people may have a reduced ability to metabolize armodafinil, doctors should consider reducing their dose.14].
  • Pregnant women: Animal data suggest that armodafinil may be harmful to the fetus. For this reason, avoid taking armodafinil during pregnancy.14].
  • Children: Safety data in children have not been established. It should not be used with this population [14].

Legality

In the United States, armodafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act [18]. That means it has been determined to have accepted medical uses and a low potential for abuse. It was approved by the FDA for use in the US in 2007 with a prescription.

Similarly, in most other countries, armodafinil is only available with a prescription. It is only available without a prescription in a small number of countries, such as Mexico and India.

This means that the only 100% legal way to get Armodafinil in most countries is to get a prescription from your doctor. To be eligible for a prescription, you will likely need to have a diagnosis of narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, or shift work disorder.

Another important legal consideration is with respect to professional sports. Armodafinil is banned by most sports leagues and organizations, including WADA and USADA, as a performance-enhancing drug [19].

Pharmacology

So what is armodafinil made of? And how does it affect the body? This section is for chemistry geeks - it explains what armodafinil is and how plays.

Chemical structure

Armodafinil and Modafinil were designed for the same purpose by the same company, which may help explain why the chemical structure of Armodafinil vs. Modafinil is not much different.

The chemical name of armodafinil is 2-[(R)-(diphenylmethyl)sulfinyl]acetamide. Its chemical formula is C15h15NO2S [14].

Modafinil has a two-enantiomer structure: it has the “R-” and “S+” enantiomers present. The chemical structure of armodafinil is basically half that of modafinil: it has only the "R-" enantiomer [14]

This means that a lower dose of Armodafinil is typically needed to deliver similar effects to Modafinil.14].

Mechanism of action

As Modafinil, it's actually not exactly clear as Armodafinil works [20].

Scientists believe it has its effect in several, perhaps indirect, ways. One way is through dopamine pathways. Armodafinil binds to dopamine receptors and inhibits reuptake, increasing dopamine concentrations at synapses. Dopamine probably plays a role in armodafinil's effect on mood.

Other effects of armodafinil are unclear, but it appears to increase the availability of a number of neurotransmitters that play a role in wakefulness.20]. These include orexin, norepinephrine, histamine and serotonin.

Other important pharmacological characteristics of armodafinil include [21]:

  • An elimination half-life of approximately 11.5 to 15.5 hours.
  • It reaches its maximum concentration in the bloodstream in approximately 2.5 hours (longer if taken with food).
  • Armodafinil actually appears to last longer in the body than modafinil.
  • Armodafinil is primarily metabolized in the liver, including through the CYP3A4 pathway.
  • The elimination of Armodafinil is mainly through urine.

Best generic armodafinil

Great, you've decided that you will stop using Armodafinil. Now you just have to choose the type you want. This can be a little confusing for beginners to armodafinil, so let's break it down.

  • Nuvigil — Nuvigil is the brand name for Armodafinil. We do not recommend purchasing Nuvigil because it is much more expensive and can only be found in pharmacies in the US and Europe. You will need a prescription from a doctor to obtain it.
  • Waklert — “Waklert” is for Armodafinil what “Modalert”is for Modafinil. This is the most powerful and long-lasting form of generic armodafinil available. It is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceuticals and generally provides 8 to 10 hours of improved cognition without interfering with nighttime sleep.
  • Artvigil - This is the "Modvigil”Armodafinil version. It is a little less powerful than Waklert and usually does not last as long. It is manufactured by HAB Pharmaceuticals and is ideal for people looking for armodafinil at a slightly lower price.

Personally, we have found that Waklert is the best form of generic armodafinil that you can buy online. We highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try this nootropic.

However, if money is tight, Artvigil tends to be a little cheaper. Artvigil will save you some money and is still a solid option when looking for an alternative to armodafinil.

Country by country

Each country has different rules and regulations regarding the purchase and use of Armodafinil. This will determine if it is accessible to you.

As we know that it is confusing depending on each country, we have compiled a library of articles with nootropic country guides to provide you with all the information you need to obtain armodafinil or other nootropics in many countries around the world. Check your country for more specific information on how to get armodafinil.

For convenience, here is a quick list of Armodafinil availability:

  • Canada: Armodafinil is a schedule F medication. It is only available with a prescription.
  • Europe: In most European countries, armodafinil is only available with a prescription.
  • Australia: Armodafinil is a Schedule 4 according to the Standard for uniform scheduling of medicines and poisons [23]. It is only available with a prescription.
  • India: In India, armodafinil is available without a prescription.
  • Porcelain: Armodafinil is under strict control and is not available for medical use. It is difficult to obtain even with a prescription.
  • South Africa: Armodafinil is available only with a prescription.

History

The history of armodafinil is largely intertwined with the history of modafinil.

Modafinil was developed and tested in France during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. It finally became available for use in the US in 1998 from Cephalon under the brand name Provigil. It became one of the most common treatments for excessive sleepiness resulting from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift sleeping disorder.

Companies that develop a new prescription drug typically have exclusive rights to make and sell it for nearly two decades. But in the 2000s, Cephalon's patent for Modafinil was about to expire.

To offset the potential loss of profit margins that would result from increased access to generic Modafinil, Cephalon attempted to manufacture a new medication that would have similar effects to Modafinil. Armodafinil was created through that research and development.

Originally marketed under the brand name Nuvigil, Armodafinil was developed in France and approved in the US in 2007 [24]. The US FDA approved the first generic armodafinil to be marketed in 2016 [25].

Frequently asked questions

Before we conclude this in-depth Armodafinil review, we wanted to answer a few more questions.

Including interesting things, like...

Is there a “high” from armodafinil?

Something like. In the same way that there is a High Modafinil, there is a high from Armodafinil, but it is probably not the same type of “high” you are used to. It is certainly not the same as other drugs like Marijuana, cocaine or LSD. And it's not like “getting drunk” either.

But you can feel that Armodafinil works. The experience is one of intense concentration, clear thinking and improved mood. Some people even say they feel a little euphoric, which is probably due to its effect on dopamine pathways.13]. However, once again, you will always be in control of yourself with an armodafinil high.

How long does armodafinil last?

The half-life of armodafinil is approximately 13.5 hours [21], so it lasts a long time on your system. In our experience, you can get between 8 and 10 good hours of work, a little less than Modafinil.

Can you sleep on armodafinil?

No.Armodafinil is a wakefulness-awakening agent; Its only purpose is to keep you awake. And he does it very well. Armodafinil can definitely disrupt your sleep if you take it too close to the time you go to sleep.

In our experience, it is best to take armodafinil before 10:00 a.m. m. That way, you'll get great effects all day long, but you'll be able to fall asleep easily when you want to go to bed.

Will armodafinil show up on a drug test?

It depends on the type of drug test being used.

Most drug test the panels do No armodafinil test. If you take armodafinil, you won't accidentally test positive for other drugs like amphetamines [26].

However, armodafinil can It is detected in the blood and urine and remains in the body for three or four days. It can be detected in hair samples for much longer than that [27].

If you are in a context where they could If a test is performed for Armodafinil, such as in a professional sports context, then Armodafinil could show up on a drug test.

Armodafinil Review

Armodafinil. Fair. Plays.

Most people familiar with nootropics usually know quite a bit about Modafinil, but many are still wondering:

What is armodafinil?

Armodafinil is still not as common as modafinil, but it can definitely stand on its own. Research shows that it is effective as both a wakefulness agent and a nootropic.

In settings where cognitive performance is important, Armodafinil could make a difference. Not only does it provide endless energy for hours, but it also helps create concentration and improve memory.Studies on modafinil suggest that armodafinil may also be able to improve several different types of cognitive functions, such as planning and decision making.

Armodafinil is an incredibly smart drug. It will increase your cognition and help you focus.

If you are looking to boost your productivity and get more done, Armodafinil could be a great option for you.
